## Why this model

The Volvo EX90 is a brand new, all-electric 7-seater SUV, with first UK deliveries expected in mid-2024. This means that by February 2026, any 'used' EX90s on the market will be very nearly new, likely 2025 models with delivery mileage or very low mileage. Therefore, a traditional 'used car' analysis with significant depreciation or common faults isn't really applicable yet. It's a premium, technologically advanced vehicle focusing on safety, sustainability, and Scandinavian design. It's a solid choice if you're looking for a cutting-edge, spacious electric SUV and are prepared for a price point close to new.

## What you should pay

As the EX90 is so new, there isn't a mature used market. Prices in February 2026 for a 2025 model will be very close to the original new price, perhaps with a small discount for delivery mileage or a few thousand miles. Expect minimal negotiation room. The market for nearly-new premium EVs is still finding its footing, but the EX90's high demand and limited initial supply will likely keep prices firm. You're essentially buying a nearly-new car.

## Which trim to buy

The Twin Motor Plus trim offers an excellent balance of features, performance, and range without jumping to the top-tier Performance model's higher price. It includes a comprehensive suite of safety features, premium interior finishes, and advanced infotainment, making it a very well-equipped vehicle for family use. For a nearly-new purchase, the 'Plus' trim provides great value for the technology and luxury it offers without the significant price jump of the 'Ultra' trim.

## What to check before you buy

- As a brand new model, there are no established common issues yet. Early adopters might experience software glitches common with new technology, which are typically resolved with over-the-air updates.

## Running costs

Running an EX90 will be typical for a large premium EV. Home charging is the cheapest option: at a standard UK electricity rate (around 34p/kWh) and an estimated efficiency of 3.5 miles/kWh, you're looking at about 9.7p per mile. On a smart tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus (around 7.5p/kWh overnight), this drops to about 2.1p per mile. For 10,000 miles a year, that's roughly £970 on a standard tariff or £210 on a smart tariff. Road tax (VED) for EVs registered from April 2025 will be £190 per year, plus an additional £390 premium car supplement for five years (as it's over £40,000 new), making it £580 per year for the first five years after the first year of registration. Insurance will be on the higher side due to its high value, advanced technology, and newness to the market.

## Key stats

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Twin Motor Core | £78,000 | £75,000 | Google built-in; Pilot Assist; 360-degree camera |
| Twin Motor Plus | £83,000 | £80,000 | All Core features plus:; Bowers & Wilkins audio system; Head-up display |
| Twin Motor Ultra | £96,000 | £92,000 | All Plus features plus:; Air suspension; Massage function front seats |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £72,000 | 100% |
| 2027 | £68,000 | 94.4% |
| 2028 | £62,000 | 86.1% |
| 2029 | £55,000 | 76.4% |
| 2030 | £48,000 | 66.7% |

As a brand new model, the EX90 hasn't entered its depreciation 'sweet spot' yet. Buying a nearly-new 2025 model in 2026 means you're still taking the brunt of the initial depreciation, which for premium EVs can be significant in the first few years. The sweet spot for value will likely be around 3-4 years old (2028-2029 models), when the steepest part of the depreciation curve has passed, but the car is still relatively modern and under warranty.

Total value lost since new: 42%.
