## Why this model

The Volvo C40 is a fantastic choice if you're looking for a stylish, safe, and premium electric SUV. It shares a lot with the XC40 Recharge but has that sleeker, coupe-SUV look. Volvos are known for their safety, and the C40 is no exception, packed with driver assistance tech. It's comfortable, quiet, and offers decent performance, especially in the Single Motor version which balances power with efficiency. The liquid-cooled 69kWh battery is well-managed, helping to maintain its health over time with an expected degradation of around 1.8% per year.

## What you should pay

The used EV market has seen significant price adjustments, and the C40 is no exception, offering great value compared to its new price. A 2022 C40 Recharge Single Motor Plus, which was around £50,000 new, can now be found for around £23,000-£25,000. This aligns with the broader market trend where premium EVs have depreciated sharply, making them an attractive second-hand buy. While the average used EV price is lower, the C40's premium badge and features command a slightly higher price point.

## Which trim to buy

The 'Plus' trim hits the sweet spot for value. It adds some really useful features over the 'Core' like Pixel LED headlights for better visibility, a 360-degree camera which is a godsend for parking, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and a heated steering wheel for those cold UK mornings. Crucially, it often includes a heat pump, which significantly improves efficiency in colder weather, extending your real-world range. You get a lot more comfort and tech without jumping to the 'Ultimate' trim's higher price tag, which often includes features you might not strictly need.

## What to check before you buy

- Software glitches (infotainment, app connectivity)
- 12V battery drain
- Rapid tyre wear (due to weight and instant torque)
- Charging issues (slow charging, not initiating)

## Running costs

Running a Volvo C40 is generally cheap, especially if you can charge at home. Using a standard home electricity rate (24.5p/kWh), you're looking at about 8.3p per mile, which is roughly £829 a year for 10,000 miles. If you switch to a smart EV tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus (around 9p/kWh overnight), that drops to an amazing 3p per mile, costing only about £304 a year for 10,000 miles – a saving of over £500! Road tax is free until April 2025, then it's £195 per year. Insurance can be a bit higher for premium EVs, so budget around £800-£1200 annually, depending on your circumstances. Public rapid charging (70-85p/kWh) is much more expensive at 23.3–28.3p/mile, so try to stick to home charging.

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Core | £47,000 | £21,000 | 19" alloy wheels; LED headlights; Google Android Automotive infotainment |
| Plus | £50,000 | £23,500 | All Core features plus:; Pixel LED headlights; 360-degree camera |
| Ultimate | £55,000 | £26,000 | All Plus features plus:; Panoramic glass roof; Larger alloy wheels |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £23,500 | 100% |
| 2027 | £21,150 | 90% |
| 2028 | £19,398 | 82% |
| 2029 | £17,693 | 75% |
| 2030 | £16,200 | 69% |

The 2022 model year is currently the sweet spot. It's 4 years old in 2026, meaning it's already taken the biggest hit in depreciation from its new price. You're getting a relatively modern EV with good tech and battery health, but at a significantly reduced cost. Buying now means you avoid the steepest part of the depreciation curve that new cars experience, and you'll still benefit from a few years of lower depreciation before it levels out further.

Total value lost since new: 31%.
