## Verdict

- **Best value year**: 2012
- **Ideal trim**: 3.0 V6 TDI
- **Target mileage**: 80,000–120,000 miles
- **Max previous owners**: 4
- **Target price**: £8,500

## Why this model

The Volkswagen Phaeton is a true 'sleeper' luxury car. It offers incredible comfort, refinement, and a build quality that rivals Bentley (it shared a platform with the Continental GT!) for a fraction of the price. It's incredibly well-equipped, quiet, and a fantastic long-distance cruiser. You're getting a lot of car for your money, but be prepared for potentially higher running costs due to its complexity and luxury car parts prices.

## What you should pay

The Phaeton has suffered massive depreciation, making it an absolute bargain on the used market. You can pick up a well-maintained example for the price of a much smaller, less luxurious car. However, this low purchase price is offset by potentially high maintenance costs, especially if the complex air suspension or electronics go wrong. Factor in a significant contingency fund.

## Which trim to buy

The 3.0 V6 TDI is by far the most sensible choice. It offers a good balance of power and (relative) fuel economy, making it much more palatable for daily driving than the thirsty petrol V8 or the notoriously complex and expensive-to-maintain W12. The diesel engine is robust, but ensure the DPF system is healthy.

## What to check before you buy

- Air suspension failures (leaks, compressor issues)
- Electrical gremlins (infotainment, sensors)
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) blockages on diesel models if not driven long distances regularly
- Brake wear (heavy car)
- Corrosion on some underbody components

## Running costs

For the 3.0 V6 TDI: Fuel costs will be around 18-20p per mile (based on 32mpg and £1.50/litre diesel). VED (road tax) for a 2012 model will be around £320-£395 per year. Insurance can be moderate to high due to its luxury status and parts cost. Servicing and parts are where it gets expensive; expect specialist labour rates and premium component prices. A major air suspension repair could easily run into four figures.

## Key stats

- **Fuel Type**: Diesel
- **Horsepower**: 240-245 hp
- **Mpg**: 30-35 mpg
- **Reliability Score**: 6/10 - Complex systems can lead to expensive repairs, despite solid build quality.
- **Safety Rating**: Not Euro NCAP tested, but its substantial size and robust construction provide excellent passive safety for its era.

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 3.0 V6 TDI | £55,000 | £8,500 | Leather upholstery; Heated front and rear seats; Four-zone climate control |
| 4.2 V8 Petrol | £65,000 | £9,500 | V8 engine; Upgraded sound system; Sunroof |
| 6.0 W12 Petrol | £85,000 | £12,000 | W12 engine; Massage seats; Rear entertainment system |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £8,500 | 100% |
| 2027 | £7,800 | 92% |
| 2028 | £7,000 | 82% |
| 2029 | £6,200 | 73% |
| 2030 | £5,500 | 65% |

The Phaeton has already taken its massive depreciation hit. You're buying it at the bottom of its curve, meaning future losses in absolute terms will be relatively small. The sweet spot for buying was probably 5-7 years ago when prices first bottomed out, but even now, you're getting incredible value for money, provided you can handle the running costs.

Total value lost since new: 90%.

## Alternatives to consider

- Audi A8 (D3/D4)
- Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221)
- BMW 7 Series (F01/F02)
