## Verdict

- **Best value year**: 2021
- **Ideal trim**: Pro
- **Target mileage**: 30,000–50,000 miles
- **Max previous owners**: 2
- **Target price**: £15,000

## Why this model

The VW ID.3 is a solid choice if you're looking for a practical, well-built electric hatchback. It offers a good balance of range, comfort, and a familiar driving experience, making the switch to EV easy. Early models had some software quirks, but these have largely been ironed out with updates. The liquid-cooled battery is a big plus for longevity and consistent performance, with expected degradation around 1.8% per year, meaning a 2021 model should still have around 91% State of Health (SoH) by 2026, or about 52.78kWh usable capacity.

## What you should pay

The used EV market has seen significant price adjustments recently, making the ID.3 a much more affordable option than it was a year or two ago. A 2021 ID.3 Pro with around 30-50k miles is currently sitting around £15,000. This reflects the broader market softening, particularly after Tesla's price cuts, offering great value for buyers. You're getting a lot of car for your money, especially considering its original new price.

## Which trim to buy

The 'Pro' trim (with the 58kWh usable battery) hits the sweet spot for most buyers. It offers a very usable real-world range of around 200-220 miles (from its 266 miles WLTP), which is plenty for daily commutes and most longer journeys, without the higher cost of the larger 'Pro S' battery. You get a good level of standard equipment, including decent infotainment and driver assistance features, making it comfortable and convenient without breaking the bank.

## What to check before you buy

- Early models (pre-2021) had software glitches, ensure updates have been applied
- Some owners report minor interior trim rattles
- Infotainment system can be slow or buggy at times (improved with updates)

## Running costs

Electric cars are generally cheap to run, and the ID.3 is no exception. With a real-world efficiency of about 3.6 mi/kWh, at home with a standard electricity rate (around 24.5p/kWh), you're looking at about 6.9p per mile, which works out to roughly £686 a year if you drive 10,000 miles. If you can get on a smart EV tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus (around 9p/kWh overnight), that drops significantly to about 2.5p per mile, or just £252 a year for 10,000 miles – a saving of over £400! Road tax is free until April 2025, after which it will be £195 per year. Insurance costs will vary, but expect it to be comparable to other family hatchbacks.

## Key stats

- **Fuel Type**: Electric
- **Horsepower**: 201 hp
- **Mpg**: 3.6 mi/kWh
- **Reliability Score**: Good, especially post-software updates
- **Safety Rating**: 5-star Euro NCAP (2020)

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pure Performance | £30,000 | £12,500 | 45kWh usable battery; 150 hp; Basic infotainment system |
| Pro | £35,000 | £15,000 | 58kWh usable battery; 201 hp; Discover Pro infotainment with navigation |
| Pro S | £40,000 | £18,000 | 77kWh usable battery; 201 hp; Longer range (up to 330 miles WLTP) |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £15,000 | 100% |
| 2027 | £13,200 | 88% |
| 2028 | £11,880 | 79.2% |
| 2029 | £10,811 | 72.07% |
| 2030 | £9,946 | 66.31% |

Buying a used ID.3, especially a 2021 model in 2026, means you're letting the first owner take the biggest hit of depreciation. EVs, particularly early models, have seen significant value drops, but this means they're now reaching a more stable point. You're getting a relatively new car with modern tech at a much more accessible price, and the depreciation curve should be less steep for you moving forward compared to buying new.

Total value lost since new: 33.7%.
