## Verdict

- **Best value year**: 2011
- **Ideal trim**: Tekna
- **Target mileage**: 80,000–100,000 miles
- **Max previous owners**: 4
- **Target price**: £5,500

## Why this model

The Nissan Murano is a bit of a hidden gem if you're looking for a comfortable, distinctive, and well-equipped SUV from the early 2010s at a very affordable price. It offers a smooth ride, a powerful 3.5L V6 engine, and a spacious, premium-feeling interior for its age. It stands out from the crowd of more common SUVs, and you get a lot of car for your money.

## What you should pay

Because the Murano was discontinued in the UK after 2014, and it's an older, larger petrol SUV, its used prices have fallen significantly. This means you can pick up a well-specified example for a fraction of its original cost. Prices are now quite stable at the lower end of the market, so you won't lose much more value in the short term.

## Which trim to buy

The Tekna trim is definitely the one to go for. Muranos were generally well-equipped, but the Tekna adds features like leather upholstery, a premium Bose sound system, satellite navigation, and a panoramic sunroof, making it feel much more luxurious. Given the low price point of these cars now, the price difference between an Acenta and a Tekna is minimal, so you get a lot more bang for your buck with the top-spec model.

## What to check before you buy

- CVT transmission problems (hesitation, slipping, failure - critical check)
- Suspension component wear (bushes, anti-roll bar links)
- Electrical glitches (sensors, infotainment)
- High fuel consumption
- Rust on exhaust and subframe on older examples

## Running costs

Running a 3.5L V6 petrol Murano isn't cheap. Fuel costs will be high, around 34-38 pence per mile based on current petrol prices and its real-world MPG. Road tax (VED) for a 2011 model is substantial at £675 per year. Insurance will also be higher than average due to the engine size and age of the vehicle. Budget for around £600-£1000 annually for insurance, depending on your personal circumstances. Maintenance for an older car with a complex CVT can also be a factor.

## Key stats

- **Fuel Type**: Petrol
- **Horsepower**: 256 hp
- **Mpg**: 20-22 mpg (real-world)
- **Reliability Score**: Average (with CVT caveat)
- **Safety Rating**: 4 Stars (Euro NCAP 2009)

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Acenta | £32,000 | £4,500 | Leather upholstery; Dual-zone climate control; Cruise control |
| Tekna | £35,000 | £5,500 | Leather upholstery; Bose premium audio system; Satellite navigation |
| Tekna (2013 model) | £36,500 | £6,500 | Leather upholstery; Bose premium audio system; Satellite navigation |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £5,500 | 100% |
| 2027 | £5,000 | 91% |
| 2028 | £4,500 | 82% |
| 2029 | £4,000 | 73% |
| 2030 | £3,500 | 64% |

The Murano is already well past its steepest depreciation curve. You're buying it at a very low price point, so while it will continue to lose value, the absolute monetary loss each year will be relatively small compared to a newer car. It's essentially at the bottom of its depreciation curve, making it a 'sweet spot' for minimal future financial loss.

Total value lost since new: 84%.

## Alternatives to consider

- Lexus RX (older models)
- Honda CR-V (3rd Gen)
- Hyundai Santa Fe (2nd Gen)
