- **Max previous owners**: 2

## Why this model

The MG 5 is a fantastic choice if you're looking for a practical, affordable electric estate car. It offers a decent range, especially the facelifted 2022+ Long Range models, and the estate body style means you get a really usable boot space that many other EVs lack. MG's 7-year/80,000-mile warranty is also a huge plus, giving you peace of mind on a used purchase. It's not the most exciting to drive, but it's comfortable, well-equipped for the price, and very cheap to run.

## What you should pay

Used EV prices have seen significant adjustments recently, making the MG 5 an even better bargain. A 2022 model, especially the Long Range version, offers a great balance of modern features, improved battery capacity, and value retention compared to newer, more expensive EVs. We're seeing these models settle into a sweet spot, making them very attractive compared to their original new price.

## Which trim to buy

The 'Trophy Long Range' trim (from the 2022 facelift onwards) is definitely the one to go for. It gives you the larger 61.1 kWh battery for a better 250-mile range, plus you get some really nice creature comforts like heated front seats, a 360-degree parking camera, and a more premium interior feel with leather-style upholstery. The jump in price from the 'SE Long Range' isn't huge on the used market, making the extra features well worth it for the daily driving experience.

## What to check before you buy

- 12V battery drain (can be an issue in some EVs if not driven regularly)
- Minor software glitches (can often be resolved with updates)
- Slower rapid charging speeds compared to some rivals
- Charging port cover sometimes gets stuck

## Running costs

Running an MG 5 is super cheap, especially if you can charge at home. If you're on a standard electricity tariff (around 34p/kWh), it'll cost you about 8.3p per mile. But if you switch to a smart EV tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus (around 7.5p/kWh overnight), that drops to a tiny 1.8p per mile! For 10,000 miles a year, that's roughly £830 on a standard tariff or just £180 on a smart tariff. Road tax is free until April 2025, then it'll be £195 a year. Insurance costs are generally competitive for the MG 5, often lower than some premium EVs.

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SE Long Range (2022) | £30,995 | £13,800 | 16-inch alloy wheels; 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto; Rear parking sensors |
| Trophy Long Range (2022) | £33,495 | £15,200 | 17-inch alloy wheels; Leather-style upholstery; Heated front seats |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £15,000 | 100% |
| 2027 | £12,500 | 83.3% |
| 2028 | £10,500 | 70% |
| 2029 | £9,000 | 60% |
| 2030 | £7,800 | 52% |

The MG 5 has already taken a significant hit in depreciation from its new price, especially with the general softening of the used EV market. Buying a 2022 model now means you're getting it past its steepest depreciation curve. While EVs will continue to depreciate, the rate should slow down, making it a relatively stable purchase for the next few years compared to buying new.

Total value lost since new: 48%.
