## Verdict

- **Best value year**: 2024
- **Ideal trim**: Design
- **Target mileage**: 10,000–20,000 miles
- **Max previous owners**: 1
- **Target price**: £20,500

## Why this model

⚠️ Limited UK data — BYD only arrived in the UK in 2024, so we have fewer MOT tests and less resale history than established brands. However, the BYD Atto 2 (known as the Dolphin in other markets) is a really promising electric hatchback. BYD is a massive global EV player, which means good support and parts availability in the long run. It comes with a fantastic 6-year/150,000-mile warranty, which is much better than many rivals and shows confidence in its build quality. It also scored a full 5 stars in Euro NCAP safety tests, so it's a safe bet for you and your passengers.

## What you should pay

For a 2024 BYD Atto 2 Design, you should aim to pay around £20,500, but be prepared for a range of £18,000–£23,000 due to limited market data. This price reflects its relatively new status on the used market. The car comes with a 45kWh usable battery, which is liquid-cooled, a big plus for battery longevity and performance. Expected degradation is low, around 1.8% per year, so a 2-year-old model should still have excellent battery health.

## Which trim to buy

The 'Design' trim is the one to go for. It gives you all the bells and whistles without a huge jump in price compared to the 'Boost' model. You'll get features like a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, and a more advanced sound system, making it feel much more premium and comfortable for daily driving. It also comes with the more powerful 201hp motor and the larger 45kWh battery, giving you the best range and performance.

## What to check before you buy

- As a very new model to the UK, specific common faults aren't widely reported yet. However, when viewing any used EV, always check the battery health report if available, ensure all charging ports work correctly, and test all the infotainment features and driver-assist systems. Early models from new brands can sometimes have software quirks, so make sure everything feels responsive and bug-free.

## Running costs

Running an Atto 2 is super cheap if you charge at home. With a standard home electricity rate (around 24.5p/kWh), you're looking at about 7.3p per mile, which works out to roughly £730 a year if you drive 10,000 miles. But if you get a smart EV tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus, charging overnight can drop to about 9p/kWh, cutting your costs to just 2.7p per mile – that's only about £268 a year for 10,000 miles! That's a saving of over £460 a year. Just remember, public rapid chargers are much more expensive (20.6–25p/mile), so try to stick to home charging. Road tax is free for EVs until April 2025, after which it will be £195 per year. Insurance costs will vary, but expect it to be comparable to other compact EVs like the MG4 or VW ID.3.

## Trim comparison

| Trim | Price new | Price used | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Active | £26,195 | £17,500 | 34.5kWh battery; 95hp motor; 15-inch alloy wheels |
| Boost | £27,195 | £19,000 | 45kWh battery; 201hp motor; 16-inch alloy wheels |
| Design | £30,195 | £20,500 | 45kWh battery; 201hp motor; 17-inch alloy wheels |

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £20,500 | 0% |
| 2027 | £17,425 | 15% |
| 2028 | £14,811 | 15% |
| 2029 | £12,589 | 15% |
| 2030 | £10,700 | 15% |

The sweet spot for buying a used BYD Atto 2 will likely be around 3-4 years old (so, 2027-2028 models). By then, the initial steep depreciation will have slowed down, and you'll get a car that's still relatively new, well within its warranty period, and with plenty of battery life left. Buying a 2024 model now means you're still taking a hit on the early depreciation, but you get the benefit of a very new car.

Total value lost since new: 47.8%.
