## Why this model

The BMW iX is a fantastic choice if you're looking for a premium, comfortable, and technologically advanced electric SUV. It offers a smooth, quiet ride, a high-quality interior, and a decent real-world range for most journeys. While it's a newer model, buying a 2022 plate means you'll benefit from the steepest part of its depreciation curve already having passed, making it much more affordable than new. It's packed with features and offers a truly luxurious EV experience.

## What you should pay

The used EV market has seen significant adjustments, and premium models like the iX have experienced substantial depreciation from new. While the average used EV price is around £28,200 for a 3-4 year old model, the iX, being a premium offering, still represents excellent value at this price point compared to its original cost. The market is still softening, so prices are competitive. This 2022 model, with its 71kWh usable liquid-cooled battery, offers a good balance of range and charging capability (up to 150kW DC). Expected battery degradation is around 1.8% per year, so a 2022 model should still have excellent battery health, typically around 91% State of Health by 2027.

## Which trim to buy

The xDrive40 trim is the sweet spot for value. It offers a powerful 322hp motor, a 71kWh usable battery providing a real-world range of around 200-220 miles, and all the essential luxury features you'd expect from a BMW iX. While the xDrive50 offers more power and a larger battery, the xDrive40 provides a fantastic balance of performance, range, and affordability, especially on the used market, making it the best bang for your buck.

## What to check before you buy

- Software glitches (common with early models of new tech)
- Tyre wear (due to vehicle weight and instant torque)
- Check battery health (State of Health) during inspection
- Potential for minor electrical gremlins

## Running costs

Running an iX can be very cost-effective, especially if you charge at home. Using a standard home electricity rate (24.5p/kWh), you're looking at about 8.4p/mile, which works out to roughly £844 per year for 10,000 miles. However, if you switch to a smart EV tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus (around 9p/kWh overnight), your costs drop significantly to about 3.1p/mile, or just £310 per year for 10,000 miles – a saving of over £500! Road tax for EVs is free until April 2025, after which it will be £195 per year. Insurance will be on the higher side due to the car's value and performance, likely in the range of £1,000-£1,500 annually, depending on your circumstances.

## Key stats

- **Fuel Type**: Electric
- **Horsepower**: 322 hp
- **Mpg**: 2.9 mi/kWh (real-world efficiency)

- **Safety Rating**: 5-star Euro NCAP (2021)

## Depreciation forecast

| Year | Estimated value | Retention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | £28,200 | 100% |
| 2027 | £24,816 | 88% |
| 2028 | £21,838 | 78% |
| 2029 | £19,217 | 68% |
| 2030 | £16,911 | 60% |

Buying a 2022 BMW iX means you're acquiring the car after its initial steep depreciation phase, which is typical for new premium EVs. The biggest drop in value has already occurred, offering you a much better entry point. While it will continue to depreciate, the rate should be more gradual compared to buying new, making it a smart financial move for long-term ownership.

Total value lost since new: 59.7%.
